Icom IC-7100 expanded frequency mod

I am looking at the document Icom produced for what they call the 'expanded frequency mod'. This is the mod concerning diodes D6315, D6316 and D6310. If removing diode D6316 it lists these as opening the 'desired frequency band':

1.6-54MHz

68-74.7999MHz

118-174MHz

400-470MHz

I have yet to open the radio and check these out and see how hard they are to remove but I am curious if anyone has attempted a mod involving these diodes before. If I do indeed end up removing D6316, will it open TX as well as RX at those frequencies or am I just looking at RX? (Either way is fine because I am not licensed to TX on a big portion, e.g. FRS, GMRS, CB)

here is the before and after photo from drgrant doing the Mars mod on my IC7100.
Size of the diode....no way in hell I'd have been able to do that!

IC-7100 MARS/CAP Modification

Remove the following diodes to open the referenced frequency ranges.

In the IC- 7100 the radio frequency range can be opened in various configurations. The chart below describes four radio frequency range configurations and the specific diode(s) that enable that configuration. Select only one of the four configurations.

Note Frequency range and specifications cannot be guaranteed after modification

    2. Shop charges $100-$150 to correct the output..from low output to 100t watts and remove the D6315 diode to transmit and receive..If you like to talk on 11 meters..A lot of these "wonderful" Icom 7100"s are sold with low output..30-50w..there is a mod available on u tube or send it back to dealer if under warranty..Good luck!

  2. Just wondering, I found this info on only 2 websites, I cant verify this. And the only comment on this article is kinda throwing me off... Did you try this? Did it work? Cheers

    Consider a FT-991a instead

    1. apples/oranges comparision.

If you don't like/nee D* and 4m and like Yaesu, get the 991A (not the 991, as that one is really limited with the bandscope).

I still would opt for the 7100. (several reasons beyond out of scope for this site/discussion)

why waste money on a 7100, spend good money on the same board and get a 7300. no one has black and white Televisions 10 year old transceiver. having both 7100 and fantastic Yaesu 991a all mode/band :)

this is the official doc from Icom. I confirm that my EU/NL 7100 indeed can be modified as per the pDF and works OK.
