[Icom_IC-7100] IC7100 DV Audio

On my first attempt to operate in the DV mode, I connected through the local access repeater to a gateway repeater and was informed by a couple of hams that my audio was very loud and distorted. I backed off the mic a bit and reset the TX DV treble and bass settings to zero. The report was not much better. Anyone else experience this in the DV mode? I ran some tests on the FM audio using a monitor radio and it was fine in FM mode so can't tell what the situation may be.

  1. Hello

Regarding the d-star modulation, I experience exactly the same issue, no matter how I set tone controls or mike gain it still have the same characteristics. Apparently Icom made an error in the microphone stage/alc. To me it sounds like and over aggressive alc. My radio also have the infamous low SSB-output-issue that are said to happen because of the same reason, a to "hot" alc in the microphone stage. I think that this fact combined with a othervise "nice" high sensitivity in the microphone stage makes this over-articulating in the quite level sensitive d-star mode. (The same characteristic of modulation distortion can be heard in the FM mode also, but it is less disturbing than in the d-star mode) For reference I compared the TX-audio with the same microphones (HM-151 and HM198) on the ID-5100 and that was a HUGE difference in quality, that rig is a wonder of transmitting crisp clear voice compared to IC-7100! So I am working on a solution to cool down the ALC, to make it act "slower" as it now is (what I believe) way to aggressive just like in SSB mode. I can just hope that one mod. will affect all 3 tx-modes in a positive way if I manage to read and understand where and how to make the ALC slower. (I am really not the one who understands very much from reading schematics) Regards, SM7XAC

  2. I agree with the comments. I bought a 7100 last fall but ended up selling it at a loss because of the low power ssb output. I should have read the reviews in detail. I wrote my own review on eham.net under my call sign K4PVA. When one spends a lot of $$ for a rig, one should get a rig that performs to published specs. I never got over 50 watts output on my swr bridge in the pep mode. My other rigs, 7200, 7410 and 706MARKIIG, all put out 100 watts pep on the same meter! I do not accept the lame and flimsy excuse by ICOM that ICOM is aware of the problem and are working on a solution. That is crap. This excuse is well known and listed in 7100 comments on line. I would have another PROVIDED that it met ALL specs. ICOM fix your mess!

  3. I have revision E5 in it, e.g.

    CMU-M 1.11
    S 1.00
    C 1.10
    DSP I 1.03
    D 1.00

I also have the HM151 mike -- yes it still does have some audible agressive
compression/alc in the modulation (not the HF ALC) but Poeple never complained about my D* stuff. Note that the mic gain is well below 30%.

A small mod in the TRX als got me PEP well over 120 Watts with the same mic gain.

Yes sometimes, something is not completely working as expected. ALl makes have this Yaesu with the 991 for instance on AM.

Luckily the Icom stuff can be fixed with minor effort.
