[icom7100] Re: GPS for IC-7100

You have to buy a simple USB GPS Mouse, an adapter from 12V to 5V for example for the cigarette lighter for few bucks and a simple connecor jack for the IC7100 GPS input .

Before you cut the GPS cable you must check, that the GPS mouse will provide the correct information (GPS sentence) for the ICOM. It could be that some information will be disabled. After checking and enabeling the correct information (normally with the utility program which comes together with the GPS mouse) you can cut the cable.

Use left and right cable for 5 V power (standard USB pin assignment), one of the other 2 remaining cable is for the jack (the IC7100 will need only one of them). May be you have to check whether cable 2 or 3. No risk for any damage.

Connect the jack with the 71oo and the USB connector with the power adapter and check the correct GPS setting of the 71oo. After few minutes the 71oo must show the GPS information. If not, change cable 2 with cable 3.

You can make a cable yourself. Look in the "Full Manual" on the CD (Icom refers to it as FM which is very misleading) section 10-2. At the top right of the page you see the below inserted picture. Icom refers to the "OPC-1529R" programming cable, which you can purchase from them at GREAT cost (around $35) to be used with the GPS BUT they state a very in-conspicuous note saying "Cross cable necessary". (at the bottom of the picture). This means that you can use this cable but pins 2 and 3 need to be reversed hence the cross cable note. You can do that by inserting a "Null Modem" connector between the RS232 plug and the GPS. You can make this "programming" cable with information from the following link. http://mw0gkx.co.uk/radprog/icomhw/opc1529r.htm If you make one and dedicate it for the GPS you can leave out the "Null Modem" by reversing pins 2 and 3.

DISCLAIMER: I have not build this cable myself and the information I provided is to be just that "INFORMATION" you are on your own to make it work. Anything going wrong is not my responsibility and you, and you alone are responsible for your own actions.
