IC-7100 MARS/CAP Modification

IC-7100 MARS/CAP Modification

Remove the following diodes to open the referenced frequency ranges.

In the IC- 7100 the radio frequency range can be opened in various configurations. The chart below describes four radio frequency range configurations and the specific diode(s) that enable that configuration. Select only one of the four configurations.

Note Frequency range and specifications cannot be guaranteed after modification

ICOM IC-7100 Why Should I buy

I have an IC-7100. All of those 45 aurora contacts made on 17 March were made using it.

I am asked would I recommend it. Well, yes, if you know what you are letting yourself in for.

Plus features are many - small size of the control unit, nifty touch screen controls, reasonable price, RF DSP, 4m for Europe, good frequency stability for data modes, USB lead to PC allowing direct audio in/out for data, DStar, coverage up to 70cms, ....

The snags I have experienced and my solutions are - low output powers on SSB (needs separate microphone with compressor), "clicking noise" (not a big thing, I am ignoring it), RF getting back into the control cable (use a short screened ethernet cable CAT6 or higher), deep cut on AGC a problem with QRN (electric fence problem in my case, turn AGC off).

Icom IC-7100 Unboxing

Icom IC-7100 Unboxing

Icom IC-7000's started arriving at all Ham Radio Outlet locations this week, so I took the opportunity to stop in and pick one up. This is the first mobile HF rig with D-Star Capability, allowing a user to use DV mode on the HF bands like on the Icom IC-9100. This radio further establishes Icom's new paradigm for how users interact with D-Star by including GPS enabled "Near Repeater" functionality, full D-Star Repeater Lists, and the list of all D-PLUS Reflector nodes.

ICOM IC-7100 programming banks

I am new to the IC-7100, and the CS 7100 Cloning Program. I have used the program a couple times in the last few days updating stuff on my radio, and all is OK so far except programing the Memory Channels. It list B01 - B99, C01-C99, D01-D99, and E01-E99 in the program. I put all the analog 2m repeaters in the A bank, and was going to put 440 in B, and 6m in C bank, but after putting the in a 440 repeater in one of the B slots, it did not load into the radio.

Are these supposed to work like the A bank? These are the Memory Channels, not the Digital Repeater list section.

[Icom_IC-7100] Low power output on ssb

A number of users have commented that the average power output of the IC-7100 on SSB, as measured on a moving coil power meter appears low compared with other transceivers. Having made some bench measurements it would appear that this is not so much a fault but rather a result of the very effective ALC on the radio that prevents it being overdriven. A correctly driven SSB transmitter should show the following approx power measurements :
Measured on moving coil meter              Measured on PEP reading meter                   Measured on Oscilloscope

Single Tone input                                   100W                        100W                              100W (peak)
Two tone input                                        40W                         100W                              100W (peak)
Speech input                                       12-20W                        100W                              100W (peak)

The reason for the lower reading on the moving coil meter is due to a number of factors including the inherent inability of this type of meter to follow a rapidly changing speech waveform.

Only a true PEP meter or oscilloscope will give a true indication of PEP, cheap wattmeters with a supposed PEP indication often have no more than a capacitor switched across the meter which again will not give a correct power indication.

ICOM 7100 power output on SSB is this normal?

I made a previous thread before going over some of the problems I have been having with my HF setup, using an ICOM 7100 as my rig, a Chameleon EMCOMM II antenna which is an end-fed antenna, Diamond SWR meter, LDG IT-100 tuner, and PowerWerx 30 AMP Desktop switching power supply.

A brief summary on the previous issue, which is related to the problem I am continuing to have:
The problem I was having before was that I was unable to make any contacts on the 40 meter band or any other HF bands such as 20 meters. I tested my radio with a few Hams I know, one of them was 60 miles away from me and the other was 20 miles away. Both could not hear me transmit even though I was in close proximity to them. I ended up taking my radio to Ham Radio Outlet to have them check the radio. They tested it on FM, 7.200 mhz and it was outputting 90-100 watts which they said was perfectly normal. I was told from the guy at HRO that the radio is working perfectly. I don't have any reason to not believe him, as he was very knowledgeable and helpful. I was told that it since the radio tested fine, it was probably either an antenna problem or I need an amplifier to bring my radio over 100 watts output due to the hilly terrain of living in Santa Clarita, California. I was told that out here where I live it is a very typical problem to get a signal out in the local area, and even though I may be able to make contacts 300 miles way on SSB, locally it can be more difficult because of the terrain.

ICOM IC-7100 QSO Recorder is low audio

I find that my QSO recordings from my 7100 is much lower then from my 51a. The audio is low in both D-STAR so and regular FM repeater QSO. Is there a way to increased the audio of the recording?

ICOM IC-7100 Firmware Release E4

ICOM IC-7100 Firmware Release E4

Below we have many conversation about the new firmware release for the IC-7100.  The below is NOT a step-by-step, however discussion by 20 about the upgrade process.

Start off by making notes from :
  • Go to SET>OTHERS>INFORMATION>VERSION. This will show the all the build levels for the CPU and DSP.
  • Did you also do a full back up to the SD card?
  • Backup 1st
  • Read all first before starting.

International DSTAR HF Testing Net – SUMMER Schedule

Use your ICOM 9100/7100, or STAR Boarded non ICOM DSTAR HF, or the DSTAR box from NC.
We routinely have two way communications coast to coast and North to South, South to Canada, Europe and Australia. We have had two way contacts to Japan. And have been heard in South Africa.
We are on each band only for 2-5 min. or so as to spend less time, if the band is dead we move on earlier. You can go back to a good freq after the net.
MONITOR REF030C to coordinate. WE may need to move early or if the freq is busy.
We do not want to step on any AM or SSB activity.
We also use a web page to keep track of who and where we are at -     http://hf.dstar-relay.net/
You also can check-in to this web site anytime 24/7 to find a DSTAR HF Ham to talk to.
We will have a PRENET for 30 min. before the start of the scheduled time. This PRENET is for ‘FREE FORM” contacts. One should check the web site

[icom7100] Re: GPS for IC-7100

You have to buy a simple USB GPS Mouse, an adapter from 12V to 5V for example for the cigarette lighter for few bucks and a simple connecor jack for the IC7100 GPS input .

Before you cut the GPS cable you must check, that the GPS mouse will provide the correct information (GPS sentence) for the ICOM. It could be that some information will be disabled. After checking and enabeling the correct information (normally with the utility program which comes together with the GPS mouse) you can cut the cable.

Use left and right cable for 5 V power (standard USB pin assignment), one of the other 2 remaining cable is for the jack (the IC7100 will need only one of them). May be you have to check whether cable 2 or 3. No risk for any damage.

Connect the jack with the 71oo and the USB connector with the power adapter and check the correct GPS setting of the 71oo. After few minutes the 71oo must show the GPS information. If not, change cable 2 with cable 3.

Updating the Internal DStar Repeater List for "Near Repeater" Function

Updating the Internal DStar Repeater List for "Near Repeater" Function

I have seen lots of articles and posts on creating memory positions for repeaters using cloning software but does anyone have instructions on how to update the reapeaters list found using the IC-7100 touch screen, native "Near Repeater" button?

The  D-STARINFO.COM website maintains is a great resource for repeater lists and lots of other d-star related things.

N1MM with IC 7100

I have tried it via CI-V on both my 7100 and 7800 and it leaves a lot to be desired. Since this thread is about N1MM it is important to note that the Icom command set (CW via CAT control) is not supported by that software. A COM, LPT, or WinKey is required to send CW. Winkey or Winkey emulator is by far the best way in my opinion and is easily configured in N1MM.

Icom IC 7100 Low Modulation in SSB Mode

Icom IC 7100 Low Modulation in SSB Mode, CW / RTTY / FM / DV Power ALL OK !
Bulbs show that Icom Ic 7100 (100Watt) modulates as the Kenwood TS 2000 50 watt.
